There are many ways you can set up a punctuation bee. This "spelling bee" format works well for 1st and 2nd graders.
Assign a punctuation mark to each student (more than one may have the same mark). Hold up a large note card with a simple word. Give student 30 (or 60) seconds to make a sentence using the word and his or her punctuation mark at least once. Extra points for using the punctuation mark more than once (for example: the comma, apostrophe, period or quotation mark) are optional. Write the sentence on the board so students can see how the mark is used.
For 2nd, 3rd or 4th grade , hold up a word and a randomly selected punctuation mark. For a second round, give the students two marks.
My latest book in which final marks count! What punctuation mark are you?
The Sounds of Punctuation
When I visit schools, I like to have a little fun by approaching punctuation from an auditory perspective. Try this in your classroom - I bet your students will enjoy it. Or just read it aloud at home - no one will know if you are laughing every time you make the "pfpt" sound....
Little Miss Muffet sat on her tuffett. [pfpt]. She took out her spoon and started eating her curds and whey. [pfpt] Suddenly, [gug] a spider sat down beside her! [boing] Do you know what Miss Muffett did? [hnh] She ran away! [boing] Do you know what the spider did? [hnh] Neither do I. [pfpt]
Meet ALFIE and his friends as they try out for the punctuation mark talent show. ALFIE is a magician!
