South Anna is Super!

I have to thank the PTA, the Principal and Assistant Principal, Bridgett Alford, Kathy Green, Lara Ivey and the amazing students at South Anna Elementary for one of the best school visits EVER! I was so welcomed by this great school and I met the nicest, smartest students. We had great fun with the Alphabet Lady, rocked with Alfie the Apostrophe, and had an amazing Punctuation Bee with the 4th and 5th graders - congratulations to Mary (the winner) and all the participants.

And here's a great tip - one of the third grade classes told me that to celebrate National Punctuation Day they made cookies of different punctuation marks, but could only eat one after making a sentence using the mark. How clever and fun is that???!!! (that last mark is called and interrobang).

And by the way...I hope to hear from some of the budding writers!

  1. Moira, I love that you have "FUN" with Punctuation! I wrote a bunch of things for the Fun for Kidz magazines - once they had a topic "Fun with Business" and I didn't see how I'd come up with anything, but then I wrote this poem, which they published last year. A fun way to understand Supply & Demand - hence the name! Feel free to share with your kids. Melissa

    SUPPLY & DEMAND
    by Melissa Ann Goodwin

I went to buy some widgets
but they did not have enough.
I asked the man who sells them
and he said, "Aw, gee, that's tough!"
He sent me to another store,
the man there said, "We will get more,
    but when we do,
    they will cost you,
a whole lot more than they did before!"

I did not like his answer.
    I did not understand.
So I asked my friend the banker
to lend a helping he hand.
He said, "When there are widgets few,
    the price goes up,
    for those who do
have widgets, can demand a price
that sometimes does not seem so nice!"

    Sometime a while later,
I went back to the store,
the place was filled with widgets
    from ceiling down to floor.
    A sign said,
    "Buy one get ten free!
We've got too many widgets, see!
And now we have to sell them cheap,
because in widgets we are deep!"
